I need high-interest, relevant lesson plans, poetry and short stories that I can incorporate easily and quickly as mini-lessons to related daily lessons, versus teaching in isolation as a whole unit.
My students come to school each day with the potential to grow as lifetime learners, but many times lack the exposure, knowledge base, and learning strategies on how to develop this skill. Our students come from a small section of a large county that is often overlooked because it is so rural. Our school has strong parent support, but with the financial situations of many of our families, the opportunities for our students to see what else is out there in the world are often limited to the county line.
My students' desire to learn and make better lives for themselves is unfortunately often derived from negative experiences that most adults could not imagine.
The students want to learn, but often they are lacking in the courage to admit they don't understand or to ask for help. When we read pieces in my class that students can relate to, they become intensely interested and the blossoming begins. It is so rewarding to see them engaged and participating simply because one small part of a reading stirred something in them that they were able to connect with. Those are the most teachable moments for my students.
My Project
These resources will allow me the opportunity to easily include poetry on a more daily basis. They will help guide me as a teacher in providing better instruction to my students on how to analyze and evaluate poetry on their own. These resources will provide students with engaging materials that they can relate to, which will make poetry more fun and inviting to them. It is a way for students to see they are not alone in their experiences, how people's lives are outside of their community, and that human feelings are universal. My hope is that the stigma around poetry being boring and "too hard to understand" will be broken down, one day at a time in my classroom.
