My Students
My first grade students are inquisitive and active learners. We begin every day with building activities from our STEM bins. Each student may pick a partner and a STEM bin and work together to build. This activity is an easy transition into the day with lots of hidden learning. Students are learning skills of engineering and many collaborative play skills. We often discuss how structures are made and show them off to each other. Students have spontaneously started working together as a whole class to try to create a tower of unifix cubes that will reach the ceiling or used multiple bins to create an obstacle course for others to follow.

I have provided a limited number of options for my students, and I feel that they could benefit from additional building resources.
My Project
I strongly believe that young children need to be encouraged to play and create. Although I have provided my students with a limited number of options for building, I feel that they could benefit from additional building resources. The possibilities provided by some of the open-ended building materials on my list would give my students even more ways to work together and create imaginative play structures.
The creative abilities of my students are endless.
I would like to be able to incorporate these materials into building projects centered around our curriculum objectives and reading comprehension. This would give students the opportunity to bring their engineering skills to life and be able to relate them to their reading and writing.
