My Students

Do you know what it is like to hear about an experiment versus actually conducting the it? Students are able to show books they have created, demonstrate science experiments for everyone to see, and use math manipulatives for all to understand. The best part, the students become the teachers!

My students are culturally diverse Hmong students.

Many enter our school not speaking English or having seen the letter A before. Our school is situated in downtown so it can be challenging to bring the country side, sea side, and mountains to those students who have not traveled more than a 60 mile radius. My goal is to bring technology to them that will help them connect with our constantly changing world. And you know what, they love technology. My students, like other students, use MP3 players, iPod's, and the Internet. This year, our classroom is going to be starting the school's first blog. My goal is to continue expanding their use of technology, their understanding of the world they live in, and help student reach his/her potential.

My Project

I am requesting an ELMO for our classroom. This devise will help our students "see" the curriculum. I can take any text and place it underneath the camera, manipulate it, zoom in on it, and highlight important pieces of it. This will help guide students through comprehension and strategies with reading selections. Another magnificent ability is to place an experiment under the camera. One that you do not have many resources for or it may be too dangerous for young students to work with; the whole class can now watch and see the result. They no longer need to huddle around a small box and do their best to see only a portion of it. My favorite subject, math, can also be brought to life. I can "show" how manipulatives benefit our learning. They will all be able to understand how to use maps to build 3D shapes, calculators to check their work, and see how fractions can interact with each other. These tasks would otherwise be more complicated with just a white board.
