This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school, which sits on the edge of Richmond, California, has a student population that largely consists of children of color and almost one-third of the students are English Language Learners. All of my students come from diverse countries, families, and socioeconomic standings that lead to a rich cultural environment. However, due to the high poverty rate in my county, many students are not afforded the hands-on, extracurricular education that they deserve.

My goal is to create a curriculum that is hands-on, student-centered, and relevant to their lives.

I personally teach the upper levels of ELD which means my students are in my class for two periods a day. The longer class day allows more time to get into projects, create some art and have longer discussions about the real world.

My Project

Our classroom is in need of more bookshelves for our growing reading area! During our two periods together, students are expected to read for 15 minutes daily. For many students this is a great way to relax and get into a good book but for others it is a challenge to even know where to start. That is when I started searching for all the middle school bests. Fear Street by R.L. Stine, Marvel Comics, Anime, non-fiction, poetry, biographies and sports books have become staples in our classroom library.

With a growing classroom library comes a need for the space to put all those crazy books!

I want these books I'm requesting to be displayed in a enticing way, not shoved away or in piles stacked on a table. These bookshelves would also help add to the overall appearance of our reading area! Our reading area already includes two book shelves, a couch, and a carpet for our kids who rather be sprawled than in a desk. It would make this little corner of the classroom look much more like the library we want it to be.
