As noted before, I strive to create an environment for my students that encourages diversity and cultural appreciation. However, many mainstream books for school children focus on the lives of Caucasian students with different obstacles. These books will allow more access, and hopefully more interest, to books that have characters who reflect them. Books like Esperanza Rising and The Afterlife by Gary Soto focus on the issues that affect Latina/o students personally. In addition, these stories are at a reading lexical level for my middle school students that will push their comprehension skills but also are not too difficult that they will give up. These stories not only validate the culture and environment they live in, but validate them personally. On the news we see so much negativity towards immigrant families and people of color. This is a way for students to see another side of the story, a side that gives them pride to be a Latina/o. All students deserve to feel pride about who they are and where they come from. This is why I am asking for donations to my project.
