Mrs. Pettis from Chicago IL is requesting Books through DonorsChoose, the #1 classroom funding site for teachers.

Expanding Our Library With Science Fiction & Fantasy

Help me give my students access to science fiction and fantasy books so they can broaden the genres they read during independent reading.

My Students

My students live in a low socioeconomic community where COVID-19 has lingered. They love writing and reading, but don't have access to a variety of science fiction and fantasy books. I want to make sure they have access to high interest books as they learn new techniques for their creative writing assignment.

My Project

I want students to learn the fundamental difference between science fiction and fantasy. Students will analyze how science fiction narratives describe what is possible whereas fantasy narratives describe what is impossible. Science fiction elements have a firm basis in reality. In contrast, fantasy elements are founded purely on facets of the imagination.

Then, students will use these books as mentor texts as they create their own story in either genre.

Students will learn how to integrate prominent characteristics of the science fiction (space travel and exploration, advanced technology, authentic world, interplanetary conflict) and fantasy (unique magic system, elaborate world building, dangerous quest, mythical creatures).
