Our school is a Title I school located in inner city San Diego. The majority of our students live in the neighborhood, but we also have parents who bring their children on the city bus to attend our school.
We provide free breakfast for our students and the children in our neighborhood.
We also provide free lunch to each student enrolled. We also provide weekend food backpacks for at-risk students. The food is child-friendly, nutritious, nonperishable, and easy to prepare and eat.
Our families are often immigrants from nearby Mexico, but we also have families from Tanzania, Laos, Thailand, Samoa, Somalia, Sudan, and Ethiopia. A high percentage of our students are English language learners and will be the first generation to attend college in their family.
Non-fiction reading is very important in expanding knowledge, wonder and vocabulary in any child. I would love to show my students the world outside of their neighborhood by exposing them to reading of various subjects and content matter through reading. We will use the News Week to increase our knowledge and learn new vocabulary.
This resource will give the children the opportunity see a world outside of their own.
The motivating subjects and photos will help to move their curiosity from wonder to reality through their discussions and after reading projects.
Help me give my students the tools needed to look and explore new places, subjects and people through this wonderful reading resource.
