My students from Chicago are the most friendly, inquisitive and hard-working children! They are students with special needs including Learning Disabilities, Developmental Delays, Autism and Down Syndrome. They are excited to learn each day and are eager to show what they know! Because each of my students has unique learning needs, I work individually with them as well as in a small group setting.
Chris Burke said, "It's not our disabilities, it's our abilities that count." As a special education teacher, I always try to focus on the abilities of my students; their capabilities and areas of growth as opposed to their weaknesses.
Most of my students already feel self-conscious due to the fact that they are academically behind their classmates so along with working on their academic needs, I also work with them in an inclusion setting with their general education classmates. They love to participate and contribute in the whole group setting.
My students also have unique learning styles. They all benefit from having access to a variety of learning materials including visuals, manipulatives and technology. Utilizing these multi-modal resources increases their success in the general education setting!
My Project
My students are Diverse Learners, each with their own unique learning needs. Some of the skills that they struggle the most with is building and decoding words and reading and comprehending complex text. Academically, my students are one to two years below grade level and would benefit from resources designed for their abilities.
By utilizing varied materials like manipulatives, leveled reading passages and word and sentence building magnets, my students will have greater ability to access grade level material.
My students will increase their literacy skills which in turn will increase their self-confidence and their ability to access grade level material along with their general education peers.
