I service forty-three students within a school in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. While all of my students from prekindergarten to fifth grade have a speech and language impairment, they have a vast range of needs.
Language is the medium of the schools and children who have a speech and language disorder have more difficultly accessing the curriculum than their peers.
My Project
While I have many books I have been curating a list of new books that I cannot wait to share with my students. These books will increase the overall diversity of my book list. I am most excited for the books which discuss autism and ADHD in child friendly ways.
Allowing my students to read about students who are like them will help them see the character's successes and envision their own future successes; regardless of their disability.
Wordless books are another amazing way to elicit language and to create opportunities to formulate their own stories.
