Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students are those who have been unsuccessful in 9th and 10th grade in a traditional high school setting. As they enter our smaller school community to get back on track, they bring such insight and intelligence with them. Many of my students haven't seen success in years, so they experience new-found interest in education at our continuation school. In addition, many of my students face the challenges of poverty and the challenges that come with it.
My students are ready to get back on the pathway to success!
By building a learning community in my classroom, my students are able to support each other, find success, and get a second chance to earn credits towards graduation.
My Project
Many of my students have failed their first two years of high school English. Sadly, many of the novels read in traditional English classrooms don't engage my students as much as I would like. Being a small school, our school library is also relatively tiny. I would like to give my students the opportunity to choose a book with three of their classmates to read, analyze, and reflect on together using a "Book Club" type structure.
Giving students a chance to read multi-cultural books that appeal to them will expand their worldview.
Many of my students haven't travelled extensively, so having books to read about characters and locales that are beyond the borders of their hometowns will provide them a sense of possibility. By meeting in the small book clubs, students will have a chance to not only read together, but improve their communication skills. The Book Club setting will allow them to use debate and argumentation skills in a safe setting that will help prepare them for their future.
