This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My 8th-grade students are very dedicated to their learning and are excited to come to school every day. Many students have responsibilities outside of school work and their anxiety about these other responsibilities can and has been a barrier to accessing learning in the classroom. One way to alleviate student anxiety is by making our classrooms as safe and welcoming as possible.
Unfortunately, as a Title I School, with a majority of our kids on free and reduced lunch, there are not many resources to create safe and comforting spaces (such as classrooms with flexible seating and tools to assist with de-escalation).
With the funding to execute this project, I am hoping the students will feel inspired and comfortable enough to focus in class so homework is never needed to understand the core curriculum in US History.
Many of our students have difficulty focusing on the classroom material, especially after attending all elementary school classes on Zoom. With the ability to take wellness breaks by clicking "camera off," many students had the option to prioritize their wellness. As we transition back to school, I want students to still have the liberty to self-regulate and utilize productive tools to focus (such as calming strips and flexible seating).
Investing in flexible seating and a safe classroom environment that is welcoming and exciting will energize my students to refocus when they have difficulty understanding the classroom material.
