Many of our students have difficulty focusing on the classroom material, especially after attending all elementary school classes on Zoom. With the ability to take wellness breaks by clicking "camera off," many students had the option to prioritize their wellness. As we transition back to school, I want students to still have this liberty in the classroom environment. Investing in a calm corner that is welcoming and exciting will energize my students to refocus when they are having difficulty understanding the classroom material. Additionally, the calm corner will offer me, as a teacher, the ability to send students that are disengaged to a "fun" or "welcoming" space, rather than feeling isolated by laying their head down on a desk in the back of the class or being sent to the office. I never want to remove my students from the learning space and so this calming corner will give them the option to listen to my voice while focusing on re-centering themselves. For those students who need moderate accommodations to refocus, I have decided to invest in whiteboard paint for all their desks. This will allow students to take notes, doodle, or write reminders on their table. One key aspect to this project is the list of items that reflect the identity of my students in the classroom - coloring books of plants in Hawai'i, Pacific centric maps, and Hawaiian creation stories. Many maps in our classroom barely have Hawai'i on the map itself and we lack posters, textbooks, and novels that relate to the experiences of our students. Hopefully, this project will turn our classroom into a place where students want to learn, grow, and be in community with one another.
