Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach fourth grade in PS 43, in the South Bronx, where 100% of the students in my school receive free lunch. In my school, we work very hard to boost the literacy skills of every student. We know that once they are strong and confident in literacy, better understanding in all content areas will be easily accessible. A great way to get a class interested and excited about reading is to have a class read aloud book. The class reads this book together in addition to the independent reading books that students read each night. A class book makes it easy to explain difficult language, learn vocabulary, discuss the story, and share a common interest with the entire class. In order to make the class book a success, it is very important that each student has a copy of the text in front of them so they can follow along with their ears and their eyes. In the past, I have tried to photo copy entire books for students so they were able to follow along. This process was terribly time consuming, and took away valuable time from other things that would help my students make great academic gains. Here is what you can do to help: I would love to have a set of 30 for each class read aloud book. Listed below are the titles and authors of fourth grade books that have been successful class read aloud books. How to Eat Fried Worms, Thomas Rockwell Dear Mr. Henshaw, Beverly Cleary Shiloh, Phyllis Reynolds Naylor The Cricket in Times Square, George Selden Felita, Nicholasa Mohr My Name is Maria Isabel, Alma Flor Ada Because of Winn-Dixie, Kate DiCamillo The Cay, Theodore Taylor Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Roald Dahl The BFG, Roald Dahl James and the Giant Peach, Roald Dahl Superfudge - Judy Blume Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, Judy Blume Fourth Grade Rats - Jerry Spinelli I know that having these class sets of books would excite my students a great deal, and create many special and beneficial reading experiences. Thank you in advance for your generosity.
