My students need 10 more clarinets for our incoming sixth graders! Please help us achieve our goal which is to provide enough instruments for the new sixth grade band!
Our small academy's band is expanding to include 48 more students next year. Because band is a requirement we must be able to provide instruments for each student. Our current inventory is 20+ years old and we do not have nearly enough to provide for our new sixth grade band.
Our small academy within our larger middle school was recently approved to become an Innovation School for academically gifted and talented students.
Our innovation school plan for the 2012-2013 school year will be to expand our student body from 48 seventh and 48 eighth graders to also include 48 sixth graders. Our students are a culturally diverse group; 53.2% students are categorized as minorities (15.2% African American, 25% Asian, 13% Hispanic) and 56% are on the free or reduced lunch programs, placing their household incomes at or below the federal poverty line. These students are highly motivated and ready to achieve! All we have to do as teachers is provide them with the highest quality materials and education possible. That is why I am reaching out to you today.
My Project
These clarinets are a quality brand and will last our students for many years! By providing our sixth grade students with these instruments, it will enable them to participate in three full years of band. This will not only bring the middle school program to a higher level of achievement, but will provide our high school program with more developed, mature and dedicated musicians. We believe that this will raise the overall level of achievement and retention rate from grades six to twelve. An extra year of experience playing on a quality instrument will give each student more confidence and an enduring sense of commitment to the music program. A positive, strong experience in music and the arts can leave an impression on students for a lifetime.
If we are unable to raise enough money to expand our instrument inventory, the sixth grade students will have to miss out on a year of band.
Being in the band is like being on a team; we do not want to see our sixth graders get sidelined!
