My Students

Our school is our district's alternative high school. The students who attend are mainly Juniors and Seniors who are at risk for not being able to graduate with their boundary schools. Many students have had trouble in the past with either family/home life, school, substance abuse, attendance issues which has to lead to them being critically credit deficient. They are good kids who just need a second chance for success.

We have small class sizes (cap at 15) which helps us be able to provide hands on, one on one instruction to the students.

This provides opportunities for us to develop personal relationships of trust, of which most of these kids have never experienced. Because they know we care, students tend to thrive and start accomplishing more than they ever have in their academic past. Moving them closer to their goal of graduation.

My Project

We have limited resources since we are the alternative high school. I do not have a gym to use, only a classroom. I do everything I can to provide opportunities for students to get a variety of physical activity. We do a lot of circuit training, using our own body weight and I currently have a few exercise machines, but it would be really nice to have a few more to provide more of a variety. Students keep track of their physical activity and log it each day.

Some of the equipment we currently have is outdated.

They squeak every time they are used. Having some new equipment would be really nice for them to be able to change up their current exercise routine.

I try to incorporate yoga and mindfulness in my teaching as well, so the yoga straps would be very helpful. Right now, anything I teach that needs a strap we just do it without. I already have yoga mats and blocks, so the straps would be a bonus for us.
