With up to 39 students per class, my students need everything that is available to help them stay focused, interested and engaged.
Although we're in "technology savvy" California, our school is just now transitioning from chalkboards to whiteboards and from overhead projectors to document cameras.
Our school population is 70% free and reduced price lunch and just last year each school in our district received a web page on the internet. Our school was built in the 60's and has brown paneling on the walls of most classes.
My Project
Scholastic Math Magazines for all students would bring relevant (to young teens), exciting math problems to all students, and into their homes - they'd be able to take them home! Word wall posters would very easily brighten the brown walls with standards based, interesting, sometimes funny, and catchy math phrases and formulas. The Wireless digitizer tablet will allow me to move around the room while writing on top of whatever is being projected from my computer. (Currently if I write something, I have to switch to the overhead projector, limiting my mobility to just the front of the room.) Teacher proximity helps students focus, stay on task, and helps minimize behavior problems.
Donations to this project will spark math conversations at home, as students talk about math problems that include their favorite teen star or iPhone App.
Having math posters will aid retention. More focus and concentration, and minimal behavior problems due to teacher proximity will lead to more learning. The impact will be an improved learning environment for all students.
