Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

"Teenagers DO want to read, if we make the right books available! I teach 10th grade Reading/Writing Workshop to students in an inner-city alternative school. Most of my students read below grade level and my class is designed to reach students who might not embrace reading without a nurturing and engaging setting. My goal is to help them love reading and to create life-long readers, writers, and learners.

Most of the books available through the department of education are classic school texts that students associate with their struggles with reading and not with pleasure. Given these choices, most of my kids check out during reading time. However, when presented with choices that truly interest them, I'm finding that my students will really embrace reading. However, many young adult books don't provide a lot to connect with for students of color and we've been limited to a few key authors, most of whom have been presented to kids many times already. The books they bring in that are marketed as "urban fiction" are often poorly edited and inappropriate for teenagers.

However, I've recently noticed the emergence of an exciting new genre - Young Adult Urban Fiction that is edited, polished, and appropriate for young teenagers! Much to my excitement, I'm finding entire series of books that are about kids of color going through the things teens want to read about - love, relationships, school issues - and it's so exciting to finally be able to hand students books with covers that appeal to them, characters they can actually relate to, and by authors they've yet to discover.

Your help will make it possible for my students to perceive reading as something they can connect to and books as tempting and exciting. And, of course, reading every, single day will help them be ready for college. And I want to see every one of my students go to, and be successful in, college. Thank you so much for reading this proposal.
