Exciting Books That Are Easy To Read For Special Needs Kids!
My students need exciting and interesting books written at their grade level, which are accessible to struggling readers with special needs.

My Students
My students are 7th and 8th graders with learning disabilities. All of them read several years below grade level. They would like to be more proficient readers, but some find reading frustrating because of past failure. I want my students to learn to love reading as much I do.
My students have mild to moderate learning disabilities and spend most of the day in special day classes, with the goal of preparing them to take regular classes later in their schooling.
They attend a high poverty school that is very ethnically and racially diverse. Many of my students have experienced the traumas of having parents who have been incarcerated, are struggling with addiction problems, or are no longer present in their lives (or have died.) Some have spent time in foster care. They are very sweet kids who want to have a chance at having successful lives and who understand that reading and writing are essential life skills in the 21st century.
My Project
My students will enjoy reading books that are of high interest to young teenagers, but are written using simpler language, so they can understand and enjoy them. They will develop their reading comprehension and fluency and will develop the skills to read materials that are closer to grade level. This will inspire a love of reading while building essential life skills.
My students will have a much greater chance to have successful, rewarding, and productive lives if they develop their reading skills and achieve their full potential.
These books will support this goal and make a real difference in their lives.
