My students have mild to moderate learning disabilities and spend most of the day in special day classes, with the goal of preparing them to take regular classes later in their schooling. They attend a high poverty school that is very ethnically and racially diverse. Many of my students have experienced the traumas of having parents who have been incarcerated, are struggling with addiction problems, or are no longer present in their lives (or have died.) Some have spent time in foster care. They are very sweet kids who want to have a chance at having successful lives and who understand that reading and writing are essential life skills in the 21st century.
