Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school is in a high poverty area of Austin, TX. Our focus is college readiness, because many of our students will be first generation college attendees. We have a strong AVID program, and we try to encourage study habits, organization, and reading!

Academically we struggle because so many of our students are English Language Learners, or read below grade level.

These students need extra motivation to read. I'd like new books to build interest in reading at my school.

My Project

I'm always looking for ways to encourage reading because almost seventy percent of the students at school are English Language Learners, and additionally we have many students that read below grade level. As the librarian, I am always searching for books that are accessible to my students. Those books need to be high interest, and graphic novels and easy to read books help too! I want all of my students to be life long readers, and if I can put the right book in their hands that grabs their interest, I can get them hooked!

The books I selected are from authors or series that already circulate heavily in my library, and I know if my project is funded it will set off a flurry of excitement to read them.

I specifically picked books that are a 3rd-6th grade level, easy to understand content, and pictures. These things help the English Language Learners and students that read below grade level understand what they are reading and make reading fun.
