Excited to Put Front Desk in All my Students Hands!!
My students need novels that reflect their lives and experiences - Books, I believe, need to be utilized as mirrors and windows. "Front Desk" addresses many of the issues relevant to my students and their families.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students in my school are consistently eager to learn and enthusiastic about new and exciting learning opportunities, despite the challenges that they face outside of the classroom. Our students live in an urban, low-income city comprised largely of immigrant families. Many of our students speak a language other than English at home.
As emerging, striving readers, many of our students are drawn to novels where they see characters that reflect their cultures, families, and lives.
Our classroom library is in need of more books that represent immigrant families - families such as those portrayed in Kelly Yang's book, "Front Desk".
My Project
A sure-fire was to boost engagement with books is to provide novels with students who's lives and experiences are reflective of what students themselves know. I am looking to put copies of "Front Desk" by Kelly Yang in my students hands for many reasons. This story reflects the lives and experiences of many of my students - new to the country, trying to find a home, fitting in with peers, struggling with learning to read and write in a new language - All of these are issues that main character, Mia, endures in this novel. It's an excellent example of a novel mirroring the experience of many of its readers. I would love fifteen copies of this novel to share with my students!
