My small class of 15 sixth graders are reading on a fourth grade level. Due to the fact that they struggle with a variety of reading skills, they just do not like to read. Reading to find information is a task for them and reading for pleasure is, for the most part, out of the question! Several months ago I hit upon a book that they have loved. We read the book, Shiloh, a book about a boy their age who rescues and cares for an abused hunting dog. I observed, almost immediately, that their attitudes and excitement about reading changed. They came in my door asking if we were going to read the next chapter. They asked if they could take the book home and read ahead. They actually begged to read! Following the completion of the book, I ordered the sequel, Shiloh Season. They were thrilled! I am requesting that you provide the final book in the series, Saving Shiloh, so that we may end our year having read the entire series. Almost all of these students are from lower income families. Many do not have someone at home who would take them to a bookstore and purchase the final copy so that they could read it over the summer on their own. As much as I would like to, I cannot provide copies for them and our school funds are depleted for this area of instruction. I am requesting 16 copies, which would also provide a teacher's copy. On behalf of my sixth graders, I thank you very much for your consideration of this request.
