My students are a fantastic bunch of rising 5th graders! Each student has his/her own unique learning style, requiring a variety of differentiated strategies to help them succeed. The diverse population of our school has about 75% free and reduced lunch.
My kids LOVE reading, and look forward to reading high interest titles that they enjoy.
The literacy environment I have created engages readers, but I would like to make reading more fun by updating book titles in our classroom library. Please consider funding this unique and exciting opportunity for my students!
My Project
Having taught for 14 years I am noticing a decreased interest in reading among my students. Having to constantly compete with technology, students do not have the attention span required to sit down and read a book for any sustained amount of time. Updating my classroom library with high-interest titles, hand selected by my students, will hopefully get them excited about reading again.
Each week I plan to do book talks with the class to introduce new classroom titles and peak their interest about books already on the classroom bookshelf.
It would be my hope that, as oppose to previous years, I hear less moans and groans when I announce it's time to get their browsing baskets to read. Instead I want to hear more CHEERS and YAY'S when students are told they get to read for 20-30 minutes.
