Exceptional Students Need More

Help me give my students hands-on learning at their individualized levels. High interest combined with a lower skill level is important to maintain active participation.

My Students

As a Special education teacher, I work with some of the most vulnerable populations, impacted most by this pandemic. These students need individualized instruction and support to access their grade-level instruction. This is something that is required by IDEA law since the 1970s, yet congress has yet to fully fund and support these students' individualized needs.

I hope to support to provide hands-on, mutli-sensory learning support for these exceptional students that have been negatively impacted, and continue to fall further behind, due to the circumstances of Covid-19.

Supporting these students now with specific, research-based interventions at the elementary level can greatly improve their chances of becoming contributing members of the community when they are adults. As the teacher, I see how these students want to learn, but feel as though the needed supports are out of reach because of costs.

These exceptional students are our future and I want to be able to confidently say I did everything in my power to support them and give them the tools to become lifelong learners.

My Project

Students will use materials to engage in hands-on learning activities. Some of these materials are products I need more of because as special education teachers we have not been included in the school counts.

These requested materials can support sensory needs so students can remain with their same-age peers as much as possible.

Manipulatives for both language arts and math skills have been restricted due to typically sharing. This has not been permitted during the pandemic for contact tracing reasons. Having multiple of the same item allows the opportunity for students to take ownership.
