This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students are bright, inquisitive, wholehearted, thoughtful young people who have dreams of becoming great! Our school is located in the South Bronx. The neighborhood struggles with extreme poverty, violence and being woefully under-served by public services. Students and their families cannot usually spare money to buy books. This includes Moleskine planners which at $21 a piece, are an unaffordable luxury.

Students in our learning community tremendously value books.

They take care of books and share them as if they are treasures! The students in our classes are avid readers and writers. However, they don't have strong places to track their assignments, appointments and progress! These planners would be a significant strategic tool for our intrepid, young minds to help them on the journey to bringing their goals to life!

My Project

Planning is essential to accomplishing challenging tasks over time. Schools are so focused on providing excellent instruction in subjects that we often neglect the underlying strategies that can more broadly affect success in school and life. There are many projects in English that we undertake in which planning out the arc of the larger project is extremely helpful. Planners help students to begin to prioritize and to keep track of the significant amounts of assignments they are asked to complete. Without a planner, which is a true luxury in the South Bronx, many of our students struggle to keep track of their important assignments and also, to break them down into more digestible parts.

Planning can change the course of a student's academic trajectory and empower her or him to seize control of their education lives!

While we work to help students do this as teachers, it would be most beneficial to have the powerful tool of a Moleskine Weekly or Daily Planner for our students. The day these planners arrive students will use them to track assignments, break down larger intimidating projects into doable parts, and build a habit of prioritizing. This will be a year-long project and will require reflection, discussion, and celebration of progress. We look forward to this journey of academic and strategic enhancement!
