Excellent English Activity Kit for Newcomer Migrant and Immigrant Children

Help me give my students newcomer materials to work with migrant and immigrant children who are coming into our school with no English language. It has been a challenge to find materials to work with them.

My Students

My students are ESOL (English as a Second or Other Language) students in grades K to 5th. Our goal is to reach all four language domain areas including: reading, writing, listening, and speaking, while tying the content to the Georgia Ed. standards.

My students are from a rural community of Georgia coming from families of migrant, farm workers, and industrial factory workers.

We are a school where 100% of our students qualify to receive free lunch and 90% of our students are at-risk. Our school is a Title I School and our ESOL program is a Title IV program. Our students are precious Hispanic and Indian children who come from bilingual families that speak mostly Spanish and Hindi at home. We have a translator for our school system as well. Their families are very involved in our school; however, many do not have anyone to help them with English at home.

We have Kindergarten through 5th grade and serve their international families as well. Many are learning English as newcomers, and many are learning academic content in English; but have other languages spoken at home.

My Project

We have a big influx of migrant children coming in from Honduras, Guatemala, and Mexico. They are coming in with no language, no alphabet knowledge, and no speaking ability in English.

We need hands-on materials to help to teach them English so we are requesting English language skill builder centers and dry erase markers.

My student get on the computer all day with a newcomer program, but we need small group materials to work with these children.

My students have to take the Georgia GMAS test the first year they come to our school and they need materials to build key academic vocabulary in English. It also helps them to blend in socially with their peers.
