Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The concept of evolution is often difficult for my students to fully comprehend and appreciate, so, with the help of your generosity, I would like to provide them with a meaningful and realistic college-prep curriculum.
I teach Biology and freshman science at an inner city/urban public school where over 50% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunches.
Years of budgetary constraints have left science stockrooms bereft of functional materials, with little opportunity to replace broken or damaged equipment and supplies.
My Project
I would like to enhance the basic textbook instruction on evolution that includes Darwin's finches and soot-covered moths with hands-on activities and statistical sampling labs. By carrying out round after round of "natural selection" with their game pieces, they will understand how some variations are better than others. By having them research and test a person's ability to taste PTC, I will be able to seamlessly incorporate genetics into the lesson as well. No longer will students be forced to draw their knowledge solely from the textbook. Instead, they will be able to experience natural selection in real-time with the game, and use themselves and their friends as test subjects to examine and analyze PTC tasting ability. What better way to get students involved and engaged in their lesson?
When students fully comprehend the idea of natural selection and survival of the fittest, then they will be able to understand a core principle of biology.
Viewed though the lens of evolution, they will be able to understand both the reasons for and the delicate, interconnected nature of the wide diversity of life. Appreciating the tree of life and their own connection to all living things will allow my students to become better stewards of, and advocates for the environment.
