Help me give my students the opportunity to complete their science class requirement through informational learning based on their needs with high interest readings and hands-on experiments for all abilities from Kindergarten learning level on up.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach at a traditional high school that houses several special education programs. Our Level Three (Cognitive Impaired) Transition program is self-contained with three teachers, 4 childcare workers, and 45 students.
Students work on daily living skills such as cooking and kitchen safety, self-care, money management, hygiene, and getting around the community while increasing their math, reading, and writing knowledge.
We also work on social skills by playing games, reading, and discussing viewpoints with story scenarios, and working on community projects such as coloring bags for Kids Food Basket and taking charge of Paper Gator (recycling) at our school plus two local elementary schools.
I am currently working to create a science curriculum based on my students' needs for independent self-care, awareness, and both worldly topics and interests so they can contribute to conversations. Science classes in the general education setting doesn't fit so this new adventure is up to me as the program's science and social studies teacher.
My Project
Science is about studying the world around us! For our students that includes studying about themselves. This includes self-care, both mental and physical health, nutritional meal/snack planning, as well as being aware of general science topics.
Almost everything we do on a day-to-day basis requires some level of understanding that science can provide.
Cooking, taking care of ourselves, studying and learning through experiments, seeing how things are created enhance logic and reasoning skills which is needed for independent thinking. The requested materials will aid in developing the skill sets through story reading, lessons, lab and cooking experiments, and nonfictional text. Materials that can be put into a binder or folder as a set of resources once students move on from us.
