Our leaders (students) live in a very rural community of 2,500 on the Tennessee/Kentucky border. Nowhere is close. Our band program is growing very fast, but the income of the average family is low. Our program is lacking what many have but we make it work as best as we can. For many, a skill like this is the only way to afford higher education, so they endure and keep pushing using what they have access to. They come in as 6th graders with high hopes and expectations and my goal is to feed that drive, not to ever have to place it on hold.
My Project
My students work very hard to maintain good working instruments, but sometimes the details of reeds, oils etc. fall short on the financial priorities of the family. These materials will help fill the void where students may be in a situation of immediate need in the band-room but do not have the financial avenue at home.
The headphones will allow more students to work on the recording computers at once without disrupting the others in the labs of music.
The sprays will assist in flu and strep season in a room that deals in constant airflow, germs seem to grow easily.
