My students, from a small town in Michigan, are utilizing technology infused manipulatives to improve their educational experience. They are eager learners who have worked very hard at building a community feeling in the classroom. They collaborate well to accomplish goals, think critically about each other’s work, and self-monitor their actions to ensure all learners feel welcome.
Most of my students have limited access to technology outside of school.
Employers are looking for people who not only have the content knowledge to add value to their organization, but also the technical skills to maximize productivity. How can we expect students to develop those necessary technical skills without appropriate access to technology? Not only do core content classes need to infuse technology to enhance the learning experience for all learners, technology electives need to incorporate and support core content to produce well rounded learners capable of competing in the real world.
Storytelling is an art that predates written language. Stories of the past help us relate our current life to the lives of those who came before us. The best TV shows and movies aren't just great because of their action scenes or special effects, they are great because of the story behind those scenes. Too often, we limit the medium we allow students to use when telling stories - the dreaded 5 paragraph essay. It's time we expand the options for children to share their voice.
Today's digital tools allow more people than ever to tell their story and reach an ever expanding audience.
Using these microphones in conjunction with our iPods and podcasting software, students will create a podcast that we can publish biweekly. Students will be able to conduct interviews of other students, share narratives of their own, and give up-to-date information about current events at our school.
