Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a special education preschool teacher. My students range from ages 3-5. My classroom consists of students with varying disabilities; physical disabilities, communication disorders, social-emotional deficits, and autism spectrum disorder.
Regardless of their disability, my students all have their own unique personalities.
We have the class clown, the mother hen, the superhero, and the negotiator. They love to "read" books, paint, listen to stories read aloud to them, and sing songs during Circle Time. They are truly a special group!
My goal in participating with DonorsChoose.org is to be able to provide my students with all of the resources they need to support their learning. They already have so many obstacles to face in their young little lives, I don't want a lack of funding to stand in their way of getting the education they deserve.
My Project
When you think of printing cartridges, you may not necessarily associate them with language acquisition. But let me tell you this, a color printer can be a special education teacher's best friend. All of my students have some form of communication deficit, be it in their expressive or receptive language. Through repetition and systematic teaching, we are able to shape their language. Students that came to our classroom without the ability to produce any sounds are taught to make word approximations, then words, and finally phrases and sentences. The way we are able to support the students in developing their communication skills is by providing them with a rich language environment. This richness comes in the form of modeling language throughout the day. For students that are not able to acquire language solely through hearing it being modeled for them, colorful pictures are used.
Pictures are a great way to create a variety of examples for teaching new vocabulary.
Color printing offers the ability to provide materials that are bright and colorful; materials that grab the attention of the students. The toner cartridges requested in this project will be used by six other teachers in our special education program. With your support, we all will be able to create materials that will help foster the language acquisition of so many little ones in our school.
To top it all off, these cartridges are re-manufactured. This means they are better for the environment. Another valuable lesson we can give to our students!
