Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are eager, excited learners. They overcome many obstacles each day and love their "I did it!" moments. The smiles on their faces when they accomplish something for the first time are heartwarming!
The students I teach have a vitality for life despite their challenges.
My class is a third and fourth grade mild moderate Special Education classroom. My students enter with labels of disabilities, including learning disabilities, Autism, ADHD, and emotionally disturbed. Throughout the year we work together to change our disabilities into abilities, our cannots into cans.
My school is a title I school. My students are English Language Learners, many with migrant families. Most importantly, my students are special young people learning to be productive scholars and kind human beings.
My Project
The materials in this project, leveled books, library furniture, a listening center with audio books, will make our classroom library a more enjoyable space and accessible to every reader.
My students are emergent to beginning readers in the 3rd and 4th grades.
Often, finding books that are at their reading level and also exciting to them is difficult. These boxed book sets allow my readers more choice. The listening center gives them an opportunity to read/listen to books at grade level that they would not be able to access otherwise due to low reading levels. The furniture I've chosen to help improve our classroom library will make the library a more welcoming space, motivating students to spend more time reading. I've also selected book bags to allow our class library to travel with us throughout the day. Students can easily take books at their reading level to other classes and to home. Most of my students report not having books at home. Expanding our library will help them have more access to reading.
