Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I love my students because they are always willing to learn and language is everywhere! They enjoy coming to speech therapy and the word must spread because every time I pick up a student to work with, other students in the class ask if it is their turn to join us. It warms my heart knowing the kids love learning with me. When they have fun in speech class, I know they are accessing speaking and listening abilities in the most natural and efficient way possible.
Kids gain a ton of knowledge and language through playing with peers, social interactions, and collaborative discussions.
The students at my school are very accepting and joyful. I witness kindness daily, whether it be one student consoling another because his drink spilled all over a writing packet or a classmate sitting with a peer because she noticed he was all alone at recess.
My Project
Recently I have noticed students struggling with learning and establishing fundamental communication skills, this year is exceptionally hard. Our students' learning mode changed significantly as school models included online education, to be completely in person again. What once was a virtual world in which students interacted is now tangible, real, and a bit overwhelming. Children who already struggled with language are now faced with a new way to communicate.
By providing an environment rich in language, the sky's the limit for student's communication skills.
Not everyone learns language in the same way, thus creating a variety of ways we communicate not always understood by all. By incorporating materials that encourage all types of language, students have a better chance at communicating with one another. When students can participate in positive interactions, regardless if they are academic or social, those exchanges are successful.
Speech therapy isn't just practicing sounds. It is giving our little scholars the confidence and joy to learn. Materials listed for this project include a laminator to provide on-the-go resources for students to access strategies beyond speech class. Others listed reinforce learning new vocabulary, categorizing (items, actions, emotions), telling stories, open-ended questions, and building sentences to efficiently express ideas. Also, my students struggle with managing emotions. I've included books about feelings with plushies to illustrate what they can't verbalize.
As a speech-language pathologist, I love my role in helping children improve expressive, receptive, and social language. My specialized instruction helps them participate in collaborative conversations. This year has been challenging, but with your help, I am certain we can rebuild our children's academic and social success!
