My Students

Reading books that serve as windows, mirrors, and doors for my students has always been the foundation of my classroom community. This year, a school counselor and I formed a Cultural Understandings book club to help all of our middle school students (grades 5-8) develop their own cultural understandings through novel studies and discussions on identity, racism, equity, and respect for themselves and others.

Our book club students are in grades 5-8, and some of them are in-person and some of them are learning remotely.

Our book club is structured so that anyone can join in - no matter where they are. These students represent all of the grade levels and a variety of perspectives that will add fascinating elements of discussion and insights!

My Project

Middle school students are busy learning...learning about math and science and writing...but mostly busy figuring out who they are and how they fit into the world. They are looking around to see and learn from the people around them and are making connections between what they learn in school and how that helps them make sense of their world.

The ultimate goal of our Cultural Understandings Book Club is to help our students explore their own ethnic, racial, gender, and religious identities so that they can appreciate who they are and appreciate the diversity of those around them.

Each title that we choose helps our students learn about the authentic histories, struggles, and achievements of people in our community. Each title serves as a springboard for a discussion into the diversity of the stories of each person in our community and in the world in which our students will live.

Thanks to a generous grant from the Zionsville Education Foundation, we were able to purchase 2 sets of titles to get our book club started. This Donors Choose grant will allow us to purchase more titles to continue our work in developing our students' understanding and respect for everyone's stories of identity and to support our district's philosophy that Everyone Belongs. This grant includes copies of our next three book club novels, as well as some individual titles for students to check out from my lending library.
