Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Federal and state legislation is increasingly placing students with disabilities in the general education classroom. In this setting, students with disabilities are receiving instruction along-side their non-disabled peers.
This is a very exciting and promising time for students with disabilities and their families. However, the students with disabilities often need accommodations, or supports, in order to successfully access the standard course of study/curriculum.
At our school, 9% of the students have disabilities. As an inclusive-practices school, these students are all served, to the greatest extent possible in the general education classroom, with their peers. Many of the classes are co-taught, meaning special and regular educators instruct lessons for a diverse group of students (both with and without disabilities).
The data from our school, and other research studying co-teaching, supports this approach in rising achievement levels for all students. However, it is important to provide the students with disabilities necessary accommodations or supports.
The purpose of this request is to gain additional funds to purchase materials to support students with disabilities in the regular classroom setting.
Numerous assisstive devices can be used by the student to enhance their learning. These items are selected for individual students by the teachers. Items for this request include: teacher-approved fidgets, such as Koosh or Squishy Balls, which allow students to get the sensory input their body needs, without being disruptive to the class. Weighted, child-friendly pillows also help the more active child feel more settled while being instructed on the floor or working independently at their desk. Devices such as slant boards, pencil grips, and non-slip clipboards are also advantageous for students that struggle with the physical act of writing. Sticky word sentences support students as they build sentences into paragraphs. Reading supports, such as highlighter tape and word windows assist students in targeting key sounds, words or concepts as they read. At times, students benefit from visual supports- picture or word cues to guide students in an activity or transition- the Pull-Talk would help those students in a discrete manner.
By supporting this request, students with disabilities will receive supports that will allow them to be successful in the regular setting. These students will not need to be removed from their peers for instruction, but they will be able to work along-side their peers and gain knowledge at their grade level. Your gift will help these students flourish, grow, and reach their fullest potential.
