As an Exceptional Children's resource teacher, I am charged with the responsibility of helping students with disabilities be successful with the general education curriculum. One especially challenging area is written language. The state’s standard course of study requires 4th grade students to take a writing assessment- specifically to compose a narrative essay. Many of the students have wonderful ideas to share and learn to produce entertaining essays. However, due to the difficulties these students experience with conventions, there is typically a decrease in their overall scores- often causing them to receive scores below grade level.
