My Students

We have begged for and received 5 old laptops. We would like to be able to do Internet searches, projects, etc., as a class to learn "21st Century skills". Having wireless would allow us to use the computers anywhere in the room since we haven't the space to make a computer area and have hook ups.

My students are mentally handicapped high school aged students in a low-income area who attend a mainstream school in Iowa.

They receive much of their instruction in a special education class, but do attend mainstream classes for electives and physical education. Like any other mainstream peer they like to surf the net, so we like to use this interest to teach keyboarding, spelling, sentence structure, grammar, etc., through web activities.

My Project

As school budgets are getting tighter and tighter students are being asked to learn what we call in Iowa "21st Century Skills", but without current technology. We have begged for, found or been given laptop computers with dated programs on them to use for word processing, however, with furniture, students and materials we have no room to set up a computer area to be able to learn computer skills. With a router and wireless adapters for our computers, we will be able to utilize the web for lessons and activities on our laptops while being able to sit on our existing furniture to do so. Having access to the Internet will allow us to access the technology our mainstream peers also have access to/while giving us the skills to use the technology properly.

Having this technology will help to close the gap between the "21st Century Skills" my students' and their peers have with regard to technology.

With appropriate instruction, my students will be able to find information on the web to help them gain independence.
