Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a suburban high school with about 3,500 students. It is a minority-majority campus, and lots of the kids are on the lower end of the socioeconomic scale. I came to the school after my first two years of teaching in a more rural school with much less diversity. I thought I had died and gone to teaching heaven! The kids were respectful, sweet, and eager to do well. Thirteen years later, they are still the main reason I stay at my school.

My seniors are about to leave the nest of the K-12 system and enter the world of #adulting.

Many have outside jobs, and some of them are even helping to support their families. They have grown up with their minds stuck deep in the world of social media and don't always question bad ideas the way they should. I want to help them learn to think more.

My Project

By the last three weeks of senior year, a lot of kids are just done. They are ready to graduate, tired of school, and looking forward to one last summer before college and/or the real world. I need a high interest novel with real world applications to make the kids think.

Exploring issues of freedom of speech and thought, manipulation of media, and government surveillance and control, 1984 is the starting point of a great discussion.

It's a classic that fits the genre of British Literature, but its modern applications will get kids thinking about our world in a whole new way.

With these books, media clips, and news articles, I hope to draw parallels between George Orwell's dystopian future and the world we live in today. How is it alike? How is it different? How can we as individuals exercise our minds while we are still free?
