My students need special education supplies to stay focused on their learning. These include weighted lap pads, beginning literacy centers, and a variety of fidgets.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My co-teacher and I do everything we can to differentiate instruction. We want all of our kids--including those with special learning needs--to connect to 4th grade material in a way that is personal and meaningful to them. We need some more specialized gear to succeed in our mission.
This year a lot of my students have IEPs for learning differences.
Each one of them would benefit from gear that is specific to their unique needs. They have tremendous potential, marvelous gifts, and need a little help to feel comfortable and be successful in a mainstream classroom. I have three students who are extremely energetic and whose minds move a mile a minute. They need help to stay seated and focused. Some of my students have limited flexibility and find it uncomfortable to sit "criss cross applesauce" and participate in the meeting area. Others have fine-motor challenges that make writing in print a chore. Finally, I have a small group of students who are just now learning to read. They are trying to "crack the code" of the English language and need a little help from multi-sensory teaching tools to do so.
My Project
With the help of these items, my students will be able to fully participate in the life of the classroom. The foursome who are learning how to read sentences will get repeated practice at engaging literacy centers that are at their level. Wiggly kids will be able to work at their desks with the help of foot fidgets and weighted lap pads to absorb their excess energy. Kids with motor control challenges will be better able to form letters as they write, and thus have the freedom to express themselves. Students who act like popcorn in the meeting area, constantly jumping up or calling out due to a need for stimulation, will have these needs met with our new sensory-friendly seating options. My student who is just learning to differentiate between sounds in words will be able to practice auditory discrimination with the help of a whisperphone. Another student with muscular dystrophy will be able to hold a paintbrush with the help of a specialized grip. Everybody will get what they need.
Our classroom currently has two pieces of specialized gear: a weighted vest and an adjustable bench.
The weighted vest has been a game-changer for two students who are brimming over with energy that makes it hard for them to work in a classroom setting. Our adjustable bench makes it possible for a student with muscular dystrophy to be comfortable in the meeting area. These two small items have made such a difference. Imagine the impact of gear personalized to the needs of my class.
