Watching our students beam with excitement when it's book-shopping time, eagerly complete book reviews, and recommend books to one another has been such a rewarding experience for us. \r\n\r\nWe have a handful of Spanish-dominant students who used to watch their classmates bring Dog-Man books from home and wish they could share in on that experience. Now, with the addition of the complete Hombre Perro series into our classroom library, they are able to! It has also helped them build their fluency in English, as they are able to make connections across the same book in English and Spanish.\r\n\r\nWith your support, we have actually been able to share this experience not only in our dual-language classroom, but also with English language learners from other monolingual classrooms as well. Other teachers send their English learners to check out books from our library. When those students learned we had Dog Man in Spanish, they were so excited and grateful that we let them borrow a copy. \r\n\r\nWe know that the best books for children to read are books they feel excited about! Our hope is that this is a stepping stone in creating lifelong readers.\r\n\r\nFrom the bottom of our hearts, thank you for your donation! The new books have opened up wonderful opportunities for students to practice key literacy skills such as making inferences, identifying themes, and analyzing characters' motivations. We've also been using the texts to strengthen comprehension and vocabulary through guided reading discussions and creative response activities.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading is an active and joyful experience. Students read independently, in small groups, and during read-alouds where we pause to ask questions, make predictions, and connect the story to our own lives. The variety of books allows every reader to find something that truly interests them.\r\n\r\nSeveral students who once hesitated to pick up a book are now eagerly reading during free time. \r\n\r\nYour support has not only filled our shelves but also built confidence, imagination, and a love for reading that will last far beyond this year.","fullyFundedDate":1760191550912,"projectUrl":"project/building-a-love-for-reading-one-book-at/9783083/","projectTitle":"Building a Love for Reading, One Book at a Time","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Corniel","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-1_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10296681"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_573","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":542,"numTeachers":52,"percentFrplEligible":92,"percentAsian":5,"percentBlack":2,"percentWhite":6,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":84,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"10.4:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":62.8,"schoolId":573,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about PS 24 on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"PS 24","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-york/new-york-city-dept-of-ed/ps-24/573"}
