Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Diverse students + cross-curricular studies + games = fun, learning, and community. I teach 8th ELA grade students at a middle school which offers two programs: the Humanities and Law Magnet accelerated program and the comprehensive academic program. We have a high population of limited English proficient students and a significant amount of gifted and talented students. In addition, most of our students are economically disadvantaged. Needless to say, it's a diverse community and I love teaching these students.

Last year, after the standardized tests, I borrowed a bunch of Scrabble boards from friends and brought them in to have a Scrabble tournament for the students to relieve some stress. I never imagined what a success the tournament would be: students running across the room for a dictionary, discussing vocabulary, spelling and root words, doing math problems and double-checking their work, and understanding complex spatial relations. But most of all, laughing! This year, I would like to bring the Scrabble tournament back, both during school and after school.

We are in need of six Scrabble boards. When the students play Scrabble, we establish a fun learning community and bring together the diverse students from both of our programs. They learn vocabulary, spelling, math, spatial relations, sportsmanship, and teamwork.

By donating to this project, you can share in the joy of seeing one of the struggling students win the game or another running up to show me they used one of our previous vocabulary words on the board. Thank you!
