My Students
I work with students and families that come from under served communities that are furthest from educational justice and provide them with social and emotional support throughout the day. I also work with families and community members in providing after school enrichment that is full of physical fitness and STEM activities that keeps both their minds and bodies healthy. Additionally, I’m the leader and founder of the school’s Black Family Council.
My goal is to always serve my students and their families to the best of my abilities, and to develop and support positive behavior in all of our students.
I teach and interact with over 400 kindergarten through 5th grade students and every day is a new and different experience. We are a school with students who come from a variety of social and economic challenges.
We have implemented a School-Wide Positive Behavior and Intervention Support (PBIS) plan over the last 4 years, "Check-In/Check-Out" (CICO). Through CICO we work to encourage positive behaviors in our students and develop the social skills that will help them achieve their future goals. Our students’ confidence thrives when their social skills are developed in a positive way.
My students are awesome!
My Project
For years, students in Seattle's poorest neighborhoods are being cut out of their school's picture day. Being in a very cultural diverse area in Seattle, the cost for picture day packages at my school continued to be unaffordable for the neighborhood we're in. Now with the pandemic, photo vendors prices are increasing when many parents and guardians are still reeling from the economic impact of COVID-19.
This year a disproportionate amount of students - primarily, those of color - were not able to afford school pictures.
Being a parent myself and having experienced missing out on certain things like picture day because my family couldn't afford them growing up, my heart is with those students and families. It's unfair. I want to make sure the students know and realize that they are every bit as important enough to be captured in a photograph as those who are able to afford school pictures.
This ask is for a Sony interchangeable lens camera where I can take students portraits to print onto photo paper for student's to be part of the memorable tradition of school attendance, and be included in the school yearbook. This lens will provide the shallow depth of field - bokeh - that will make their pictures look as good as the ones taken by professional photographers.
This project will impact students from working class backgrounds by providing them with the picture taking experience that they deserve. Every student is worthy of inclusion.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
