Help me give my students multicultural crayons, markers and colored pencils so that when completing school projects they have colors that represent their skin tones.
I am a teacher at an urban high school. Over half of our students come from families that are struggling to make ends meet. Most families in our community value education and want to see their children succeed in school. We have a number of families that are working poor. Both parents are working and sometimes working more than one job each.
Resources for working poor families do not increase as their students age.
Most students find very little help obtaining school supplies at a high school level. Many high school students are caring for their younger siblings after school making getting a job difficult as they are expected to be at home.
All our students want to learn and graduate. Removing as many barriers as we can to help them succeed is critical. Ensuring students have basic academic needs met will help ensure their attendance remains good and they continue to grow as a lifetime learner.
My Project
Nearly half of my school demographics are students of color; however, when completing projects our school does not have colored pencils, markers or crayons that represent their skin tones.
I have seen students not want to participate because they don't have to right tools to fit in.
The simple addition of multicultural colored pencils, markers and crayons to our classroom resources will help more students feel like they belong equally in school and will help them emotionally and academically succeed. Students will be able to see themselves and their families in the work they create ensuring they feel included in the school setting.
