Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Middle school students are a different breed! They are bright, funny, inspiring, emotional, intense, energetic, and extremely talented. In the midst of discovering who they will become as they continue to grow, they are learning and developing new skills and talents. As their teacher, it is my job to love, support and encourage them as they navigate through this crazy world called "Middle School."
My students are an amazing group of kids from all over the world - literally!
As an ESOL teacher, I work with students whose second language is English. Many come to me shy, a little scared and nervous, yet eager to learn. At times, they speak little to no English and are placed into classrooms where only English is spoken. Imagine how difficult that would be!
Even with these challenges, they are strong young men and women who realize the value and importance of a strong education. They work harder, study longer, and push themselves to be the best they can be. As hard as middle school already is for kids this age, my students embrace it. They celebrate their differences and the success of one another. They are an inspiration to me!
My Project
Creativity happens regardless, of race, ethnicity or primary language. My students LOVE using our individual whiteboards in class to show off their knowledge. Right now, we use black and brown markers and they have expressed to me that they would love for their creations to be more colorful! By getting whiteboard supplies, including colorful markers, my students will be able to express themselves AND show off everything they are learning.
I am blown away by how creative my students are, regardless of the language barrier they face!
In addition to using whiteboard frequently in class, we also journal almost every day. We use notebooks, pencils, and tape a lot and their notebooks are getting full! I want to continue, full steam ahead, with writing in our journals, so that they are able to continue to express themselves. They love seeing the progress they've made since the beginning of the year, and having the writing altogether helps with that.
These supplies will continue to encourage my students to be creative. But now, it will be much more colorful and bright!
