Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from diverse backgrounds and immerse themselves daily in the cultures of their peers through learning two languages (English and Spanish). Our students strive toward academic excellence in both languages in all academic subjects, which makes them very unique. Each child brings something special to the classroom through their experiences and areas of expertise. They make our school an exceptional place to be through their determination to be successful academically while embracing the many cultures that come together within our walls.
My Project
Students spend a great deal of time within the classroom and deserve the opportunity to have a classroom that has all the needed essentials as well as feels welcoming and like a home away from home.
My students requested a variety of items that they thought were needed in order to create a more productive and comfortable classroom.
We need items such as staplers, a hole punch, binders, headphones, and student dry erase boards that we use daily. Students use binders to organize and store their math, reading, writing, and social studies work. Dry erase boards are great tools to use for math practice or as answer boards in jeopardy. Our current staplers and hole punch have seen happier days and students use them daily to keep materials in their binder or certain pages together. Since our current ones are in need of replacing new ones will be a welcome addition. Headphones would also be wonderful new items to have to use with our chrome books to watch tutoring videos or be used as noise canceling buffers during tests.
Students also requested comfort items like fans and humidifiers to improve the classroom quality. Our school is very old and we don't have air conditioning which leaves us in need of fans. Our current fans are retro hand-me-downs that are breaking and clearly well beyond their prime. New fans will be much more effective and last longer in our classroom. Throughout the year especially in winter, the classroom air becomes very dry and would benefit greatly from a humidifier to add some much needed moisture. Not only that, but a humidifier that is compatible with essential oils will not only make the class smell nice but will also allow for a more tranquil class setting as students are able to breath calming scents.
