This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Being an Early Intervention Preschool Teacher for Pittsburgh Public Schools is such a rewarding job. I have been working with children who have disabilities since 1998. The children in our classroom are ages three, four and five. It's our job to provide each one of our students with a positive and developmentally appropriate preschool experience.
Every day our students come to school filled with energy and they are always ready to learn!
It's always exciting when we help each one of our students achieve the skills they need as they prepare to go to kindergarten one day! It's the moments when one of our students may say their first word at school or learn how to share materials and help a friend. The smallest accomplishment can make our entire day. Showing our children that they can learn how to do anything they put their minds to brings the biggest smile to our faces! Practice always makes perfect in our classroom no matter how many tries it takes.
My Project
Our Early Intervention preschool classroom is a magical place where children get to play, learn, and grow together. We are so proud of all the firsts we get to share with our students daily. Unfortunately, we will not be able to show our students how wonderful our room is until we can return due to the pandemic. Instead, we will be introducing our youngest learners to preschool online this fall. In order to foster their love of art through fine motor activities; we need a variety of materials that we can send home to our students. Paper, daubers, and play dough are just a few of the firsts that we get to introduce our preschoolers.
Young children need time to practice using their fine motor skills in everyday situations.
Fine motor activity in the early year’s help children refine their pincer grasp (grasping an object with their thumb and pointer finger using their preferred hand) and are a precursor to handwriting. By practicing picking up, manipulating, and exercising the small muscles in the palm of the hand we are actually enabling children to gain control and strength while coloring, drawing, cutting, and forming letters or writing when age-appropriate. Fine motor skills also help develop hand-eye coordination in young children.
When you donate to our distance learning project you will be helping us to bring a piece of our classroom home to every child this fall. We will be able to model and show our families how to strengthen the muscles in their child's hands through play. Practicing fine motor skills will help our children have a solid foundation for their future everyday tasks! Thank you for taking the time to read about our project. Preschool rocks and so do you!
