This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come to school each day, ready to learn, and to explore the world around them. They are inquisitive, full of energy, and aren't afraid to take risks. Each has their own unique learning style and they thrive with opportunities for creativity, teamwork, and collaboration. I am eagerly awaiting the return to in person instruction next school year so that we could resume to challenging, engaging, and creative learning. When that time comes, I want to make sure I am prepared for their return. As their teacher, it is my responsibility to continue to nurture and develop my student's learning styles by creating opportunities to read about important historical events that shaped the history of the state we live in!

My Project

Because my students are 21st-century learners, it is my job to teach concepts in a creative way. To culminate our California Gold Rush unit, my grade level and I organize activities for "49er Day". On this day, the kids take part in many activities that emulate what life was like for the 49ers and for the hundreds of thousands of people that came to our state. Some of these activities include "panning for gold", creating corn husk dolls, engineering wagons, churning butter, and coding our class DASH Robot to travel through the Oregon Trail. These activities help students build and reinforce an understanding of life during The Gold Rush.

With great anticipation and with hope of returning to in person instruction for the next school year, I plan to use the class set of "What Was the California Gold Rush?" books to help build my students' background knowledge and increase their scope of knowledge of what life was like for a miner, the entrepreneurs of that time, and the life of women and children during The Gold Rush.

The books will be used as a springboard to delve into this important historical event.
