My Project

Last year I successfully piloted the book One Crazy Summer with my Ethnic Studies 9th grade class in Richmond, California. The book was a part of a 8 week long unit on the Oakland Black Panthers. It was a complete joy to successfully teach a book, given that reading is a skill many students dread practicing. It was motivational for me as a teacher because I was able to engage students in history content while also strengthening their literacy skills. I witnessed students excited to read and will always incorporate books in my class moving forward.

The book One Crazy Summer by New York Bestselling Author Rita Williams-Garcia is a phenomenal historical fiction book that my previous students love.

After reading the book last year I surveyed my students to receive their feedback anonymously. 99% of students said they recommend this book for the incoming freshman class. Given the high absenteeism rate and the wide range of literacy levels I am asking for more books to complete my class set to fit the needs of my students. I currently have 22 books and I am requesting 20 more books given that my largest classes go up to 41 students. These books will allow me to lend books to students to take home and during school hours when they are not in my class. Additionally, my number of Ethnic Studies students will increase by 20 this year so I anticipate more students needing to rent books after school hours. Given our low literacy levels, giving students access to the book in class and outside of school is the equitable approach to teaching this book in my class. I want the book to be accessible to ALL my students.
