Students will be using these fundamental supplies on a daily basis in my Ethnic Studies class. At the beginning of the school year I asked my students to purchase a notebook, composition book, a black pen, a highlighter and a folder for my class. After I checked in with my students 1-1 I realized many of my students' families did not have the financial capacity to buy new school supplies for their child or children. For this reason I am requesting funding for the fundamental supplies students need to succeed in my Ethnic Studies class. As a kid my parents struggled to provide me with the supplies my teachers required for each class and I firmly believe my students should not stress over purchasing school supplies or be outed in front of the class for "coming unprepared." Therefore I made it my responsibility to find resources to support them. The notebooks and composition books will be used by students to take class notes and write journals. Journals are so important in Ethnic Studies as students will be completing reflections regarding their identity, family and community. For instance, one of the essential question students will be answering over the course of the year is "Who am I?" Therefore, taking notes on key terminology as well as having a consistent place to journal is fundamental to their success. In addition, the folders will be used to ensure students have a place to organize their worksheets for each unit in one location. I am not only teaching my students about Ethnic Studies I am also teaching them organizational skills, note taking strategies and self-reflection practices. Without the folders, it will be difficult for students to use their previous class materials as tools to deepen their understanding of learning objectives throughout a unit.
