Etching Art With Hydrofluoric Acid In Chemistry Class
My students need 14 glass etching kits and 110 small mirrors to learn about the properties of hydroflouric acid and its commercial use in glass etching.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am so excited to be working next year as a Chemistry teacher in a small school dedicated to visual and preforming arts! I cannot wait to incorporate as many real life connections between art and chemistry as possible to show students how important chemistry is to their everyday lives!
My high school students come from an area of high poverty in a large urban city.
They will all be the first in their families to graduate high school. For some students, my class is the only reason students come to school everyday. Part of teaching is delivering and making challenging content assessable to students. The other part is the human quality of teaching. Students come to school with all kinds of challenges including witnessing gang violence on the street and raising children when they are still children. I want students to like chemistry and make it one of the reasons they continue to come to school everyday. Incorporating art into my classroom not only makes it interesting to students but helps students see the connection between chemistry and their lives.
My Project
I am requesting glass etching kits and small mirrors for students to create glass etching projects to learn about the properties of hydrofluoric acid, a very strong acid used in commercial glass etching. This project will allow students to learn how acids and bases are used in the real world. Students will create projects by etching the glass mirrors, possibly in artistic designs. Students might also create messages related to their chemistry knowledge!
Every time I use a real life example in my class, students make a new connection that will help them better understand the world around them.
Not only will you help my students stay excited about science, but by helping me keep students in school you will help them work towards their future of going to college and pursue a career of their dreams - hopefully in art and/or chemistry!
